LE COCHON ROI CHEZ LES FUTUNIENS
"Le Cochon, c’est l’animal Roi à Wallis et Futuna, archipel Français dans le Pacifique sud. Le cochon est une offrande, une monnaie d’échange, une richesse ! Il occupe une place importante dans tous les évènements socio-religio-coutumiers…et de mémoire d’homme, cet animal a toujours fait partie de la vie des Wallisiens et Futuniens" rapporte NC 1ère.
En Nouvelle-Calédonie, cette communauté est la plus importante venant des îles du Pacifique. Les Futuniens sont très attachés aux traditions et célèbrent entre eux les évènements importants qui donne l'occasion de se retrouver. L'émigration des Wallisiens et Futuniens est très élevée, souvent pour des raisons économiques. Les familles exilées de la petite Île de Futuna, scindée en deux royaumes sont très liées et la moindre occasion donne lieu à des retrouvailles lors de grandioses festivités, hautes en couleurs, où le cochon est la pièce centrale. La tradition veut que ce soit les hommes qui s'occupent du four traditionnel pour la cuisson du cochon dans une organisation très orchestrée.

In New Caledonia, this community is the largest from the Pacific Islands. The Futunians are very attached to traditions and celebrate important events among themselves which give them the opportunity to get together. The emigration of Wallisians and Futunians is very high, often for economic reasons. The families exiled from the small island of Futuna, split into two kingdoms, are very close and the slightest opportunity gives rise to reunions during grandiose, colorful festivities, where the pig is the centerpiece. Tradition has it that it is the men who take care of the traditional oven for cooking the pig in a very orchestrated organization.
